Přidáno: 09.09.2010 12:16:54 The IEEE 1394 “FireWire” interface provides a means for acquiring direct memory access. We discuss how this can be used to perform live memory forensics on a target system. We also present libforensic1394 an open-source software library designed especially for this purpose. Passive and active applications of live memory forensics are analysed. Memory imaging techniques are discussed at length. It is demonstrated how the interface can be used both to dump the memory of a live system and to compromise contemporary operating systems.
Přidáno: 09.09.2010 12:13:18 Now that multicore microprocessors have become a commodity, it is natural to think about employing them in all kinds of computing, including high-reliability embedded real-time systems. Appealing aspects of this development include the ability to process more instructions per second and more instructions per watt. However, not all problems are amenable to parallel decomposition, and for those that are, designing a correct scalable solution can be dicult. If there are deadlines or other hard timing constraints the difficulty becomes much greater.
Přidáno: 09.09.2010 12:12:13 The specification of the sporadic server real-time scheduling policy in the IEEE POSIX standard is defective, and needs to be corrected. Via experiments using a POSIX sporadic server implementation under Linux, as well as simulations, we have shown and confirmed previously unreported defects. We propose and demonstrate a corrected sporadic server formulation that eliminates these defects without any change to the API or any significant increase in implementation complexity.
Přidáno: 09.09.2010 12:10:30 Folded-Clos networks, also referred to as fat-trees, have been widely used as interconnects in large scale high performance computing clusters. The switching capability of such interconnects in the computer communication environment, however, is not well understood. In particular, the concept of nonblocking interconnects, which is often used by system vendors, has only been studied in the telephone communication environment with the assumption of a centralized controller. Such “nonblocking”networks do not support nonblocking communica- tions in computer communication environments where the net- work control is distributed. In this paper, we investigate folded- Clos networks that are nonblocking in computer communication environments and establish nonblocking conditions for various routing schemes including deterministic routing and adaptive routing.
Přidáno: 09.09.2010 12:03:43 Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is used to study the organization and the positioning of specific base pair sequences of DNA within the nucleus of a cell. Many FISH image analysis software tools have been developed capable of nuclei extraction from the image background as well as fluorescent signal identification. However, previously developed tools use a threshold-based method for extracting nuclei from the image background; therefore, they are highly inflexible, and thus manual extraction of the nuclear boundary is often required. In addition, manual extraction is a subjective task due to the investigator’s cognitive bias.
Přidáno: 09.09.2010 12:01:59 Computing the geometric minimum spanning tree (GMST)is a classic computational geometry problem which arises in many applications including clustering and pattern classication [34], surface reconstruction [25], cosmology [4, 6], TSP approximations [2] and computer graphics [23]. Given a set of n points P in Rd, the GMST of P is dened as the minimum weight spanning tree of the complete undirected weighted graph of P, with edges weighted by the distance between their end points. In this paper, we present a practical deterministic algorithm to solve this problem eciently, and in a manner that easily lends itself to parallelization.
Přidáno: 09.09.2010 11:59:51 In this paper, we study the One-Sender-Multiple-Receiver (OSMR) transmission technique, which allows a sender to send to multiple receivers on the same frequency simultaneously by utilizing multiple antennas at the sender. OSMR has the potential to significantly improve the downlink performance of wireless LANs, because with OSMR, the Access Point (AP) can send distinct packets to multiple computers at the same time. To study the practicability of OSMR in the indoor environments typical to wireless LANs, we implemented a prototype OSMR transmitter/receiver with GNU Software Defined Radio and conducted experiments in a university building.
Přidáno: 09.09.2010 11:58:21 Reliable software systems typically have a version release mechanism that is well organized and documented. This can be drawn upon to predict release timelines, which is helpful in gauging the quality of the software development and maintenance activity. In this paper we present initial results from developing and applying Predictux – a decision-tree-based framework to predict release times of Linux kernel versions. We compare predictions from the framework with actual data and discuss our future plans for refining Predictux further.
